Melissa B. Herkt

CII established the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence in 1985 to honor an individual for significant achievements in improving the engineering and construction industry. The award is the Institute’s highest honor and is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards in the industry. CII is very pleased to present the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence to Melissa Brown Herkt.

After graduating from Auburn with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Melissa joined Exxon Research and Engineering Company and spent the next 18 years leading major capital projects for refining, chemicals, mining, and offshore developments around the world.

She then served as Vice President of Global Project Management for GlaxoSmithKline, where she was responsible for capital management, resource management, project manager training and development, project controls, project management standards, and the delivery performance of projects.

Melissa moved to Austin, Texas, in 2004 to lead the Process Systems and Solutions business unit of Emerson Process Management. She retired in 2012 as president and chief operating officer of the Systems and Solutions group.

She serves as a mentor to the Auburn Engineers Without Borders (EWB). She was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 2008, the National Academy of Construction in 2009, and she is a 2015 recipient of the Auburn Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

Recognized for her contributions to the engineering and construction industry, Melissa Herkt received the CII’s Outstanding Implementer Award in 2004 and has made numerous appearances in CII’s Executive Leadership Program as a guest speaker and mentor for future industry executives. She received the Richard L. Tucker Leadership and Service Award in 2012. She was a member of CII’s BOA and Executive Committee, and served as Research Committee Chair. She served as a Benchmarking Associate and on the Data Liaisons Committee.

Her career and countless years of service to CII and the industry make us proud to present Melissa with the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence.
