CII 2021 Outstanding Academic Award and Outstanding Student Award

CII is happy to recognize Dr. Thais Alves and Dr. Bryan Franz with the Outstanding Academic Award.
CII is excited to recognize Chuanni He and Jong Won Ma with the inaugural Outstanding Student Award.


2021 Outstanding Academic Award

A recipient of the CII Outstanding Academic Award has made an important contribution to a recently completed CII initiative that has the potential to significantly improve the construction industry. Contributions are considered to be innovative, particularly effective, or otherwise meriting special consideration.
 

Thais Alves

San Diego State University

Dr. Alves helped lead her team to consider scheduling methods beyond the industry's standard by evaluating collaborative methods.

Dr. Thais Alves was one of three principal investigators on Research Team 362, Challenges and Opportunities to Promote Collaborative Scheduling. The team was challenged to consider methods of scheduling beyond the industry’s standard, critical path method (CPM). Other industries had begun using newer, more collaborative methods, and RT-362 considered how these other methods might be used as a replacement for the CPM method.

Probably a dozen member volunteers on RT-362 enthusiastically nominated Dr. Alves for this award. Previously, she was an integral part of RT-308, Achieving Zero Rework through Effective Supplier Quality Practices.

Bryan Franz

University of Florida

Dr. Franz worked to understanding how supply chain practices could be destroying value in power, utilities, and infrastructure capital projects.
 
Rama Challa     

Dr. Bryan Franz was nominated for his work as the Academic Advisor for CII’s Power, Utilities, and Infrastructure (PUI) Sector Committee. In spite of limited funds, Dr. Franz collaborated with another professor at Clemson to understand how supply chain practices could be destroying value in PUI capital projects.

Dr. Franz is an eager leader on the PUI Committee. previously, he conducted research for CII and the Charles Pankow Foundation in the area of project delivery and maximizing success on integrated projects. He is an outstanding researcher and faculty member.

For these reasons, CII is happy to recognize Dr. Bryan Franz as an Outstanding Academic.

A recipient of the CII Outstanding Academic Award has made an important contribution to a
recently completed CII initiative that has the potential to significantly improve the construction
industry. The student has worked to ensure the quality, completeness, and timeliness of the
team’s deliverables. The student’s excellence is recognized by knowledgeable team members.
 


Chuanni He

North Carolina State University

Chuanni He innovatively applied Information theory analysis to reveal industry trends in collaborative scheduling.

Chuanni He was the graduate student on Research Team 362, Challenges and Opportunities to Promote Collaborative Scheduling. As part of his work with the team, Chuanni used an innovative approach that was completely new to the research team, known as information theory analysis.

Information theory analysis enabled the team to analyze its survey data better and thereby to reveal trends in the industry. Chuanni was then able to correlate these trends to project key performance indicators, such as safety, quality, cost, delivery, and team health.

CII is happy to present Chuanni He one of the inaugural Outstanding Student Awards.

Jong Won Ma

The University of Texas at Austin

Jong Won Ma is praised for being extremely proactive and excellent at ensuring that his team adhered to its agreed-to process.

Jong Won Ma was the graduate student for Research Team 364, Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) Integrated Practices for Completions, Commissioning, and Startup (CCSU). Not only was he helpful during team meetings, when he kept the group organized and captured the critical discussions that took place, but how he advanced the research itself made the difference.

Jong Won was praised by his nominators on RT-364 for being extremely proactive and excellent at following up with research team members to ensure adherence to agreed deadlines.

CII is pleased to name Jong Won Ma one of the inaugural Outstanding Students.
