Safety - Conscious and Convergence

A final message for Construction Safety Week 2021 from Bob Wible, Project Manager for CII's Communities for Business Advancement.

Construction Safety Week has afforded CII members and our entire industry the opportunity to focus specifically on the importance of continued vigilance on the construction job site, in our travels to and from it, and in our homes. Nevertheless, safety at CII is not just an annual one-week event; it lies at the heart of CII’s activities.

In our final entry for the week, we take a holistic view at CII’s daily commitment to safety.

Conscious

Safety has been a central focus of the Construction Industry Institute since its founding. CII has been a source of research and information on ways in which the construction industry can reduce accidents, injuries and deaths. These are among the earliest research projects undertaken by CII members and academicians. In CII’s Knowledge Base are 15 safety related research reports covering everything from Annual Construction Data report to Zero Accident Techniques.

Annual Survey

Starting in 1989, CII established an annual survey of owners to benchmark safety levels in the construction industry by gathering from its members data on injury, illness and more recently near misses  and comparing it with OSHA data drawn from the U.S. Construction industry overall. Since 2018 this survey has been undertaken in conjunction with the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT). In March 2021, the survey was sent out and it will be reported on at the CII-CURT Joint Conference on August 2-4, in Orlando, Florida.  If you are an owner, you can take the survey by going to the following link Safety Benchmarking Portal.

Safety Moment

In addition to its research, CII daily demonstrates its safety consciousness by opening every CII Board of Advisors, Executive Committee, standing Committee, Sector, and CBA meeting with a 2 to 5 minute “Safety Moment.”  These moments cover a wide range of topics including those which are seasonal, come out of the day’s headlines, and from the personal experiences members.

The Safety CBA

Among the oldest of CII’s original Communities of Practice, the 62-member Safety Community for Business Advancement meets monthly to discuss and look at potential approaches to help members address a wide range of safety issues. Recent and upcoming topics include:

  • A Review of Safety Practices and COVID-19 (October, 2020)

  • Safety Planning for Demolitions (January, 2021)

  • Job Safety Analysis (April, 2021)

  • Owners Impact on Safety (May 12, 2021)

  •  RT382 – Safety and the Impact of Change Orders (June 9, 2021)

  • AWP and Safety (July 14, 2021)

Interested CII members are invited to join the Safety CBA. The Safety CBA meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Central.

CONVERGENCE

In addition to CII’s collaboration with CURT, CII has worked with other national organizations to sponsor research, hold conferences, and conduct webinars. Last summer as the COVID-19 crisis expanded, CII held a joint webinar with Associated General Contractors related to the shared experience of their members in preparing for and responding to COVID-19. Additionally, for the past 3 years CII has worked with and supported the SafeBuild Alliance’s sponsorship of National Construction Safety Week.

With safety at the heart of CII’s conscious, the Institute continues to seek out and explore collaborative relationships with kindred organizations.
