The CII Online Learning Portal offers its content to learners in a more structured way, so we now have learning paths for the multiple-part courses as well as several stand-alone courses.

Learning Paths

Constructability (4 PDH credits)

Constructability is a project-improving practice that focuses on the early identification of opportunities to improve and/or correct situations that could cause problems or inefficiencies in the construction process. Implementing constructability on a project requires focus, attention and effort throughout all phases of a project.

The first two online courses in this learning path cover the basics of constructability and the milestones for putting a constructability program in place. The last two online courses present methods for applying constructability efforts, which are based on the Constructability Concepts, throughout the phases of a project.

​Introduction to Construction Safety (2 PDH credits)

Preventing worker injuries and fatalities on construction projects is the highest priority on a project. Safety is an integral part of every construction project, and should be considered in every phase of the project. Many opportunities exist to ensure worker safety.

This two-course learning path provides you a solid foundation about construction safety, as you continue onto complete CII's other stand-alone safety online courses, offering guidance on how to effectively design, implement, and monitor safety programs on a project and within an organization.

Partnering (4 PDH credits)

Partnering provides companies with opportunities to greatly increase project performance and return on investment. However, the partnering process must be properly planned and managed to achieve the desired results.

This learning path consists of four online courses, covering the fundamentals of Partnering and every phase of the Partnering Model:

  • Introduction to the Partnership Process
  • Owner Internal Alignment and Partner Selection
  • Relationship and Process Alignment
  • Taking It to the Troops

Planning for Startup (2 PDH credits)

CII research has shown that successful project completion requires, among other aspects, achieving a successful startup. To accomplish this, project planners must conduct thorough, effective, and efficient planning for startup.

The first course of this two-course learning path focuses on the Early Phases, presenting the customizable Startup Planning Model, a tool that enables project managers to plan for startups in a thorough, effective, and efficient manner. The second course provides a description of the final phases of Startup Planning, the necessity for it, and a description and examples of the tools that help lead to a successful, cost-saving startup.
 

Stand-Alone Courses

Design for Construction Safety (1 PDH credit)

Construction workers are exposed to many safety and health hazards on construction sites. In many instances, the hazards are present as a result of the design of the facility and may create hazards during construction as well as during future operations, maintenance, and recommissioning/decommissioning.

By addressing safety in the facility’s front-end planning and design phases, hazards can be eliminated or reduced during construction, thereby improving construction site safety and health performance. Designing out the hazard is the first choice, although in some cases, the complexity of design and construction can make it difficult to eliminate safety hazards through the design.

This course explains the design for safety motivations, barriers, and enablers; design for Safety concept as it applies to construction; how to address safety in the design; resources and tools available to design for safety.

Development and Alignment of Project Objectives (1 PDH credit)

CII research found that establishing well-defined, achievable and measurable project objectives early in the planning of a construction project is critical to project success. High use of alignment principles by owners has been shown to yield, on average, 8.7% cost improvement on their projects.

However, developing good project objectives alone is not enough to ensure a successful project. The members of the project team, whose needs and priorities often conflict, must become aligned with the project objectives and remain aligned throughout the project.

This one-hour online course reviews the process for setting project objectives, the requirements for aligning project team members and project objectives, and the CII alignment tools to help project teams identify areas of conflict and resolve them.

EFFECTIVE LESSONS LEARNED PROGRAMS (1 PDH CREDIT)

CII research shows that Lesson Learned Programs (LLPs) are essential to the construction industry. The key to achieving an effective and sustainable LLP is the degree of continuing commitment and leadership from the organization’s top management. LLs become even more important as employees age and retire and turnover increases. Globalization also increases the need for LLPs to ensure that an organization is able to address critical issues such as culture, language, distance, and diversity. This one-hour online course offers a solid overview of an effective LLP.

FACILITATION SKILLS FOR PROJECT LEADERS (1 PDH CREDIT)

Facilitation skills are critical to helping project teams achieve success in today’s complex project delivery environment. When properly applied, facilitated meetings and workshops generate buy-in, increase team alignment and empower project team members. This one-hour online course introduces core facilitation skills to help project leaders facilitate critical meetings and workshops throughout the project lifecycle. Foundational facilitation practices are introduced that will help project leaders learn to facilitate sessions using CII practices including:

  • Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI)
  • Construction Readiness Assessment Tool
  • Risk Management
  • Lessons Learned, and
  • Partnering

FRONT END PLANNING (1.5 PDH CREDITS)

Capital project delivery is greatly affected by the quality of the front end planning (FEP) effort. This process has become a key focus of many organizations in recent years. All projects have unique risks that must be addressed to ensure that the project is the correct venture for the sponsoring organization, that the important scope issues are decided to form a good design basis, and that a realistic execution approach is planned to allow the project team to smoothly transition through the design process, construction and into effective startup and operations. An effective, structured front end planning process will therefore facilitate project success. Research conducted by CII indicates that effective front end planning can set the stage for:

  • better cost performance, including more predictable estimates and reduced project cost
  • reduced project schedules
  • fewer project changes
  • better operational performance
  • a reduced chance of project disasters

CII has developed a process and several tools that, when properly used, can significantly improve the work produced during the front end process. This 90-minute online course provides an detailed overview of the FEP process.

Hazard Recognition and Communication (1 PDH credit)

Hazard recognition is a core competency upon which all other safety processes are built. Without strong hazard recognition skills, even safety planning activities that are potentially highly effective (e.g., job hazard analyses and site audits) will not achieve their objectives.

This one-hour online course describes the research team's use of a mnemonic technique for learning the energy sources (e.g., gravity, electricity, and chemicals) of jobsite hazards to develop three hazard recognition strategies.

Introduction to Modularization (1 PDH credit)

Modularization entails the large-scale transfer of stick-build construction effort from the jobsite to one or more local or distant fabrication shops/yards in order to exploit one or more strategic advantages. However, the construction industry has been slow to achieve high levels of modularization and has reached a ceiling in terms of the percentage of stick-built work hours being exported offsite. CII research addressed the question of what changes or adaptations in traditional project work processes are required to create an optimal environment for broader and more effective use of modularization.

This one-hour online course discusses the five modularization solution elements and why modularization exists as an alternative option.

Introduction to PROJECT RISK ASSESSMENT (1 PDH credit)

Project teams need an effective, structured risk management process to evaluate risk exposure for potential project impact to provide focus for mitigation strategies and facilitate project success.

CII has developed a process and tool, the Integrated Project Risk Assessment (IPRA), that can be used for more than just risk assessment: it can serve as the cornerstone of an effective risk management process. The IPRA is uniquely suited to enable an integrated project team to identify, assess, and subsequently mitigate significant risks.

This one-hour online course provides a high-level summary of three decades of CII research on risk management, introducing the terms, tools, and approaches fundamental to risk assessment and mitigation. Includes informative discussions of CII implementation resources related to risk management.

Safety Leading Indicators (1 PDH credit)

This one-hour online course defines leading indicators, describing the distinction between the active and passive types. It also explains that leading indicators include policies and programs that are put in place before injuries occur, and that when such a policy or program is simply put in place, it can be considered a passive leading indicator. When it is continuously measured and used in a project safety improvement program, it becomes an active leading indicator. Finally, this course presents the steps for establishing an active safety leading indicator program.

Scope Control and Change Management (1 PDH credit)

The conceiving, designing, and constructing of a capital facility project is a complex undertaking. Change is inevitable throughout the process, but must be controlled to ensure the project parameters (like cost, schedule, quality, and safety) remain in control. Changes may cause all sorts of impacts, including interrupting the flow of work, cause completed work to be demolished or removed, create delays, cause schedules to slip and inflate costs, all of which may generate claims and result in litigation.

Managing change is therefore essential for a successful project outcome. This one-hour online course describes a process for managing project change that has proven so successful that it has been approved as a CII Best Practice.
